Angela
Hey everyone we are so glad to have you with us today. We are going to be talking about some practical tips for protecting your time which becomes even more important as you move into this stabilized season of growth.

00:47.94
Angela
So when you first start out and you're in the hustle phase. Everything is about making money getting clients keeping clients keeping clients happy and 1 of the things that tends to happen during that phase is that people start letting their boundaries. For time and communication start to slip start to blur start to slide a little bit and then when you finally reach the point in your business where you're not bending over backwards you feel like you can kind of reestablish some of those boundaries it can be really hard. Especially if you have some long-term clients that aren't necessarily used to those boundaries or you're not very good at setting boundaries in the first place that's one of the things that I hear most from people is having a hard time with and even people I have. I have clients that really try to respect my time boundaries and even they have a hard time with it. So it's it's on both sides I think whether you're trying to protect your boundaries or honor someone else's boundaries for their time and their communication style. It can be really difficult. So today. We have some practical tips for helping you protect your time so that you can spend more time with your family spend more time taking care of yourself doing hobbies all the things that you enjoy and that you've worked so hard for in your business.

02:19.85
jessievalle
Yeah I Also want to point out that this isn't just for your business. It's also for your personal life and and like you kind of just mentioned they're interconnected so when you protect your time in your business.

02:33.13
Angela
Ah, her.

02:36.47
jessievalle
You're opening up time for your family and when you protect time with your family then you're opening up some time for your business and um it it reminds me of.

02:44.90
Angela
Yes.

02:53.41
jessievalle
That book that we read a couple years ago um I'm trying to remember which book we have read a lot of books on time management. Um was it the no I think it was the perfect week formula. The.

03:03.28
Angela
We've read a lot of books was it a Ritchie Norton one oh oh yeah I remember that yeah I do remember that one.

03:12.43
jessievalle
Something like that you remember that one I think because there there was an example in that book of the guy who I can't remember if it was like Wednesday afternoon or Wednesday evening or something like that or. Something something like that where it was him and his wife's day night and he didn't work no matter what he didn't answer calls. He didn't take meetings even if it was a quote unquote emergency. It's like is it is whose emergency. Is. It.

03:33.19
Angela
Yeah,, let's see. Yeah. Right Is it. Mine is it yours? yeah.

03:46.34
jessievalle
Is it minor is it yours like ah um, no matter what he protected that date night with his wife and did people hate him for it. No they respected him for it. They're like Wow you know? Okay, he protects that time with his wife. It means a lot to him cool.

03:57.25
Angela
Right. Oh.

04:05.35
jessievalle
We'll work it out. We'll reschedule. We'll make sure that we scheduled meeting not Wednesday nights or whatever and I think that that's a common misconception is that if you don't answer things right away or if you're not available all the time then people think that means they're not. Like they think people are going to be upset about it but the opposite is true. They respect you for having boundaries and knowing what's important to you like there are some people who only take calls a couple days a week I don't.

04:26.14
Angela
Yeah.

04:33.26
Angela
Yeah.

04:41.95
jessievalle
Think negatively of those people. Do you know there, you go you know that's that's a way to kind of protect your time. So I just wanted to point that out that it's not just about business. It's also about.

04:45.49
Angela
Ah, no I'm one of them.

04:59.28
jessievalle
Personal life and that when you protect your time with any of the tips we're going to talk about today. People aren't going to shun you for it. In fact, they might be jealous of you for it.

05:10.94
Angela
Yeah, yeah for sure. Ah I think those are really important things to remember and and just to acknowledge that it's hard and you're goingnna slip up and you're gonna make exceptions and sometimes things are gonna happen and.

05:25.78
jessievalle
Ah.

05:28.85
Angela
Like Jessie said this isn't just about work. It's about family I have found myself with time being at a premium lately and you know one of the things that we had to discuss with the kids was that like I mom doesn't necessarily have time to drop everything.

05:35.64
jessievalle
E.

05:48.33
Angela
Right? This second and you know do this thing take you this place make you this snack. You know there are times when I have to be doing the thing that I'm doing and that's hard as a mom to like set those boundaries with your kids. Um.

05:49.80
jessievalle
Ah.

06:04.61
jessievalle
That's true.

06:06.55
Angela
And of course like age is a factor like I'm not going to do that to a 2 year old but my kids are all older. Yeah, my youngest is turning 10 Um I know but that aside it is it is definitely something that.

06:08.70
jessievalle
I was just gonna say yeah your kids are getting older. So it's a little different. Oh my gosh.

06:24.76
Angela
Can be used both for business and personal and is important. It's important for you to not just use these to carve out time for yourself, but use these to make sure that you are not overburdening yourself or burning yourself out where you're trying to spend too much time moving going doing. And not enough time just resting or recovering or enjoying things.

06:51.98
jessievalle
Yeah, and it okay I totally use lost my journey of the I know I had some good to say. Ah no at ah.

07:00.50
Angela
Ah.

07:09.24
jessievalle
Amy Hosey well then in that case, let's just jump into some of these tips. Um oh I remember what I was going to say so when you use your time. It's all about what you're prioritizing.

07:23.65
Angela
Ah, her.

07:23.95
jessievalle
So I've always like I heard that once years ago and I've I've tried to internalize it ever since I never say I don't have time I Just think about how it's not the highest priority for me right now.

07:31.97
Angela
Um, yeah.

07:37.26
Angela
Yeah.

07:40.50
jessievalle
And that is like you said really hard when that equals something that deals with your kids you start to feel that mom guilt. But guess what if they have to wait 20 minutes to get that snack. They're gonna survive.

07:44.53
Angela
Oh yeah.

07:55.90
Angela
They're gonna make it they might think so but they will they'll make it.

07:59.82
jessievalle
Ah, true debt. Ah um, but yeah so I mean they always so many people have mentioned how time is your most valuable resource because it's not replenishable money is replenishable.

08:13.29
Angela
Yeah.

08:19.40
jessievalle
Because a lot of people worry about money. But guess what you can make money over and over and over again. There's always a place to make money. There is not any place to get more time. So.

08:19.50
Angela
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

08:29.40
Angela
Yeah, definitely.

08:35.98
jessievalle
All right? 1 of the things that business wise specifically or even personal that we suggest for protecting your time is to set designated times and I would say not just designated times but time limits for checking your emails and social media. So.

08:49.40
Angela
Yes. Oh what.

08:55.86
jessievalle
Part of this can avoid the constant interruptions of ding ding ding email email email social media comment social media comment if a lot of times on social media if I comment on someone's thing. The fact that they respond to me at all is awesome. It doesn't need to be within the first five minutes I posted it. So um, just setting those designated times and if you're worried for someone who. Let's say reaches out on your Facebook business page. You can have automated responses that set those expectations of hey thank you for your message. We'll get back to you within 24 hours so there that set the expectation that you don't have to get back within 5 minutes so by setting those. Designated times to check your emails in your social media. You're not constantly hopping back hopping back hopping back but it also to me helps you not get caught in the scroll. Especially if you set a time limit and the scroll is dangerous because you might start with business.

10:02.00
Angela
Yeah, scroll is dangerous.

10:09.75
jessievalle
End with pleasure and 3 hours later you're like oh crap. Um I it you have that timer on your Tiktok. Don't you that after a certain amount of time your Tiktok just shuts down.

10:12.13
Angela
Yeah, for sure.

10:18.90
Angela
I do yes and it's cumulative. So it's not like I can get on there for 5 minutes here and there all day and spend 4 hours on there. It's cumulative for an hour I get. And you can extend it like it'll give you the option to extend it for an hour or for 15 minutes but for me, it's like if I'm doing that I'm doing it consciously I'm doing it on purpose and it's not just the we've already spent an hour on here.

10:37.57
jessievalle
Um.

10:45.15
jessievalle
Right? right? And it's a nice little reminder like hey by the way you've already spent an hour of your life today. Ah.

10:53.34
Angela
Yes, yeah, um, and you can use it to limit. Ah you know, bite size your social media I have one on Facebook for 15 minutes because especially during the pandemic that was. The most amount of time I could spend on Facebook without getting really upset just over everything that was going on. There's too much going on news and everything else and so I would it would just add 15 minutes it would cut me off and then the next time I would get back on I would tell it like give me fifteen more minutes

11:13.63
jessievalle
E.

11:24.78
jessievalle
Um, yeah, ah.

11:30.51
Angela
And so that was how I got through my day on. Um, but again, it's that intentional I'm doing this on purpose time limits for things like that.

11:31.43
jessievalle
Yeah, yeah.

11:40.58
jessievalle
Um, yeah I would also urge you so to check other messages too like.

11:53.58
Angela
Ah.

11:54.78
jessievalle
I know a lot of people who use voxer for their business and they have set designated times like if you message me I will I will check it but I only check messages once a day. So if you get it to me after that time I'm not checking it till the next day

11:57.91
Angela
Yep.

12:06.83
Angela
Um, yeah.

12:11.59
Angela
Yeah.

12:14.20
jessievalle
And again that goes back to the if this is an emergency whose emergency is it is it mine because if it's not mine. Sorry like that's your problem. Um, and it feels a little rude at first to do that.

12:19.14
Angela
Yeah, if it's not my emergency. Yeah.

12:29.83
jessievalle
But when you realize that you are protecting your time for the life you want. It's okay to be a little selfish and people will learn. It's not like the same person's going to be doing that over and over and over again. They'll learn.

12:35.54
Angela
Yeah, and going along with that. Oh yeah, people will definitely. Yeah, they'll get there. People are smart and going along with that choosing what apps you allow on which devices like.

12:52.18
jessievalle
The.

12:54.36
Angela
I know people that don't have slack or voxer on their phones because they don't want to be if they're not at their computer It's not work hours and they don't want to be reached. Um and I remember I remember the first vacation I took. And I remember Jesse like really encouraging me and it took this was so hard that I took all of the apps that my clients used to message me off of my phone for vacation like not just yes.

13:23.43
jessievalle
I'm a strong proponent of that during vacation.

13:26.10
Angela
Not just turn the notifications off I took them entirely off my phone so that I wasn't tempted to just check real quick and make sure everything is okay and it was really amazing. It was really nice. It was the first time in several years that I had had you know.

13:30.51
jessievalle
Who.

13:42.50
Angela
Days on end without having notifications popping up on my phone and I put some of them back on some of them I left off but it was It was a really good experience and I think that can be something that you can look at and.

13:51.79
jessievalle
Um.

13:59.70
Angela
You know decide for yourself. Do I really need slack on my phone or if I have slack on my phone do I need all of the channels on slack on my phone or can I just have the fun ones.

14:01.57
jessievalle
Yeah. Yeah, mini mini side note I saw on Instagram yesterday a post that was about like when people talk about unplugging that it's not just about unplugging at work.

14:19.98
Angela
Ah, her.

14:22.71
jessievalle
You also need to plug in the things that recharge you So whether that's you know, family or experiences or traveling or whatever it is. It's not just about unplugging. It's also plugging in and so when you unplug from work. You're allowing the space.

14:24.89
Angela
Yeah.

14:33.37
Angela
Yeah.

14:39.85
jessievalle
For those things that recharge you to be plugged in.

14:41.10
Angela
Yeah, yeah I think that's really important and those boundaries for how and when people can reach you are are really important and also just communicating those boundaries which I think is our next thing.

14:52.72
jessievalle
Um, no.

15:00.70
Angela
Um, just being very very clear on this is when you can reach me and how you can reach me and how long it will take me to get back I know like Jesse said you can automate a thing where you can say hey thanks for your message. We'll get back to you within 24 hours a lot of companies have that.

15:00.82
jessievalle
Who.

15:12.56
jessievalle
Ah.

15:15.93
jessievalle
Even on email. A lot of people have it on email which I think is nice again because that means you don't have to constantly constantly be checking your email.

15:19.30
Angela
Yeah, you know I get this.

15:24.65
Angela
Yes I I actually have a client that has one of those set up and every time I send her an email I get one back so I will get back to within 24 hours and I I always put that up front with clients when I bring them on board like you can get a hold of me this way this way this way.

15:33.50
jessievalle
Um, yeah.

15:44.53
Angela
My office or my work hours are these times on these days I take calls on these days and it's it's important to be very clear because if you want people to respect those boundaries they have to know where they are.

15:45.84
jessievalle
Who.

15:58.40
jessievalle
Exactly I mean there's no point in getting upset at someone who keeps trying to reach you when you never told them like I can't just be like I'm not going to answer you know diddada and then be mad at someone who quote unquote disrespects it when you didn't tell them.

16:05.13
Angela
Yeah, don't you.

16:13.42
Angela
Right? Yeah yep, and it's I was. It's okay to change those boundaries. But again just be very clear.

16:17.48
jessievalle
Yeah, so and oh sorry, go ahead. Are who.

16:29.80
Angela
A lot of times I know a lot of people that take the new year to do this if they're going to like switch boundaries or change workdays. They'll just send out a message at the beginning of the year that just says hey my new work hours are this my new communication things are this like I'm reorganizing I'm restruing you can do it at any time a year but that's. 1 that I see people use a lot and just kind of and deciding how what the level of communication is if I take an afternoon off do I feel like I need to let my clients know so or.

16:52.67
jessievalle
Ah.

17:07.70
Angela
Is that something that I can just do you know if I've been clear with clients that I'm not going to message you right back. It's might gonna be a day or two then I could probably just take an afternoon off I don't have to tell them that I'm not there. Ah, or you know.

17:07.22
jessievalle
Um, yeah.

17:19.69
jessievalle
A.

17:24.59
Angela
Is this something where if you're during your work hours. They expect a response in a couple hours so you need to tell them hey I'm not here. My kid is sick I'm taking to the doctor. Whatever it's really nice out. We're going to the park. Um, so yeah, just kind of knowing having those clear.

17:32.82
jessievalle
The.

17:43.52
Angela
Boundaries can help you know when it's important to reach out and let clients know whether or not they should expect a change in that. So.

17:51.54
jessievalle
Yeah, I'm going to disagree with you for just like one half a second there because I do agree that you should communicate I do not agree that you should tell them why I was going to say yeah you don't have to tell them that your kid sick.

18:04.24
Angela
Yes, that's that's fair, you don't have you can just tell them you're taking the afternoon off. Yeah yeah, you don't have to tell them that. Yeah.

18:11.46
jessievalle
You don't have to tell them. It's beautiful out and you're taking your kids to the park. That's your purse like that's private to you. You do not owe them an explanation. You can just say um I'm not available this afternoon actually that was a lot of that was from the book. Essentialism that when you get down to what's just essential if you don't want to do something. You don't have to give a reason you can just say I'm not available for that like.

18:32.28
Angela
Ah.

18:39.72
Angela
Yeah, yeah, I'm not gonna yeah.

18:46.16
jessievalle
You don't owe anyone an explanation for any choice you make? Um, so anyway, there's that but also I want to point out that you should not just not just communicate with.

18:48.46
Angela
Yeah.

19:04.46
jessievalle
Clients but you also need to communicate with your family.

19:06.30
Angela
Yeah, yeah, that's important, especially if like if you hit a busy season say all of a sudden one of your products becomes super popular on Tiktok and. You just have all these orders that have to be filled. It's way more than you usually do. It's important to communicate with your family like this is what's going on and this is what I need or if it's black friday and you know that your clients are going to be reaching out a lot like communicate that with your family. So that they are not expecting 1 thing of you and then all of a sudden feeling like oh no, this is not what we this is not what I planned.

19:53.51
jessievalle
It also reminds me especially during breaks when you have your little opening closed sign for your kitchen like you're communicating with your kids when they're allowed to get snacks and when they're not 15 minutes before dinner is not the time for snacks.

20:00.46
Angela
Yeah.

20:06.15
Angela
Yeah, when they can't not snack time. Oh yeah, yeah, yes, exactly.

20:12.20
jessievalle
My kids throw off fit every single time but I'm hungry I'm like you're not, you're not going to perish in the next fifteen minutes you can wait until I make dinner. Ah.

20:25.59
jessievalle
And then when they finally do want the snack. It's like I just want candy I didn't actually want anything of substance. Ah yeah I That's not going to fill you up.

20:28.77
Angela
Yeah I didn't actually want food. Yeah I just wanted a cookie or a candy bar. Yeah, exactly that's not food.

20:41.31
jessievalle
My gosh another thing that I know Angela and I have talked extensively about is prioritizing tasks and so when you feel like you have a bajillion and a half things to do.

20:52.12
Angela
Are.

21:00.13
jessievalle
Being able to sort them out in some way and we've shared different methods the eisenhower method of whether things are important or urgent. Um Angela has shared the method where you kind of break them into types of tasks.

21:16.35
Angela
Are her.

21:18.58
jessievalle
So they go into categories and you tackle a different category at different times of the day and just whatever method works best for you. You should be able to prioritize your tasks in some way so that.

21:33.23
Angela
Yeah.

21:36.53
jessievalle
When you have a block of time where you know you're going to be uninterrupted. That's not the moment you choose to scroll Tiktok. That's the moment you choose to do something that needs your full attention.

21:45.10
Angela
Right? um.

21:50.60
Angela
Yes, exactly.

21:53.36
jessievalle
And then vice versa when your kids are home from school and you know they're home but you have a block to do something and you might be interrupted. That's the time to do Tiktok not something you needed uninterrupted focus time for so to me, it's not just about prioritizing tasks. It's also.

22:01.75
Angela
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

22:12.41
jessievalle
Figuring out the best time of day to do those tasks.

22:14.45
Angela
Yeah, yeah, and you can always delegate tasks if you have some that need done but you don't need to be the one to do them delegate them.

22:30.40
jessievalle
Um, yeah, yeah I was um I mean my my father in law always had this kind of like life.

22:31.10
Angela
Home and business. So.

22:46.83
jessievalle
I Wouldn't say a saying but this life advice that if you have the money to hire someone to do something like work on your car or whatever like go for it. But if you do not, you need to know how to do these things yourself.

22:59.48
Angela
Um, yeah.

23:06.34
Angela
Um, yeah, exactly.

23:06.62
jessievalle
So it's like I I would gladly tell you to hire someone to do these things but we're not always in a situation to hire someone So you also need to know how to do things yourself So just know that it's okay, if you're not able to delegate certain things.

23:14.28
Angela
Over.

23:22.75
Angela
Um, right? Yes, right.

23:25.35
jessievalle
But again choose the right time to tackle them to optimize or protect your time right? Which in the end will reduce overwhelm.

23:36.00
Angela
Yeah, and will make a big difference in your day and your attitude and your relationships.

23:44.32
jessievalle
Yeah, and I think if anything it's just a lot about communication too because like when my husband's going to mow the lawn. For example, he tells me like hey I'm going to mow on this day at this time.

23:59.34
Angela
So right.

24:02.70
jessievalle
So like Saturday rolls around if he chose Saturday and I'm not upset because he's sleeping in. Oh it's fine because he told me he was going to do it in the afternoon and that also makes me less anxious because I'm like oh gosh when are we going to mow this lawn do I need to do it is he going to do it like.

24:07.88
Angela
Um, right.

24:15.18
Angela
When is he going to do that? Yeah, um.

24:19.48
jessievalle
But he has communicated to me hey I'm going to do it at this time just so you know and and that's helpful to just communicating the expectations and we talked about that this weekend too like hey okay Sunday do you have any expectations for the day.

24:21.88
Angela
Yeah.

24:38.62
jessievalle
No, do you? Yeah I want to get all the laundry done that is my expectation and at least that was something what did that equal that we weren't going to leave the house a lot because I needed to get the laundry done. Ah.

24:42.70
Angela
Um, yeah, that's my expectation. Yeah, um, yeah, yeah.

24:52.81
jessievalle
But there is a lot of power in just saying no it reminds me back ah in like fifth grade when we did the the dare program just say no.

25:06.70
Angela
Oh yeah, just lay know.

25:11.41
jessievalle
Okay, well, it's not just saying no to you can say no to drugs. But guess what social media to a lot of people. These days is an addicting drug a drug of a different type.

25:15.76
Angela
Is like a drug. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it can definitely consume a lot of your time.

Walk away find a friend I'm trying to remember like the 10 ways to say no to drugs I remember we had to memorize those. It's been so long.

25:30.69
Angela
Just say no yes, all of that. Yeah oh my gosh. It's been too long. Yes I do remember having to memorize those. It's been too long since I too that.

25:46.50
jessievalle
Ah I don't want to admit that it's been like 30 years ah

25:48.90
Angela
Right? Like it's I It's been a really long time since I've had to? yeah yeah, not that long. Yeah.

25:55.31
jessievalle
It's been a really long time but I'm really young. Don't worry but not eating over here. Not that long literally long but not that long.

26:07.67
jessievalle
I Just feel like sometimes it's.

26:16.12
jessievalle
It's hard to say no, especially when the people you care about are involved or a client that's paying you money and you're afraid if I say no and I put up this boundary. They're going to leave me and go find someone else and the truth of the matter is is they probably won't.

26:19.46
Angela
Yeah, right.

26:27.18
Angela
Yeah, no.

26:32.89
jessievalle
Probably going to respect you for it or just be like oh okay I mean I have a client that consistently messages me on the weekends because that's when she has time to focus on stuff for herself versus her customers.

26:34.63
Angela
Yeah, all right.

26:43.61
Angela
Yeah, yeah.

26:49.84
jessievalle
And guess what she's totally fine with the fact that I don't check her messages till Monday ah, and that's just the way it is like I know that this is when you have time so you're going to keep messaging me like it's just the communication hey I have time to message you I'm going to message you on the weekends and me.

26:56.76
Angela
Yeah, um.

27:07.21
jessievalle
Cool I'm not going to look at him until monday.

27:08.39
Angela
Yeah, exactly I have clients that do that too I had clients that did that over Christmas break where I take time off Christmas I would get messages that would start with this isn't for until you get back I just have time right now and I don't want to forget.

27:14.94
jessievalle
E.

27:20.45
jessievalle
Yeah, yeah.

27:25.91
Angela
And that's fine. You can send me the messages whenever you want. But here's when I'm going to be checking them and when I will be responding to them.

27:28.49
jessievalle
Yeah. Yeah, and I Also think it's hard even for us in this day and age of being able to constantly connect with people when you think of something you want to message them right away but you don't have to like I'm I'm working on a project where.

27:45.56
Angela
Um, yeah.

27:50.60
jessievalle
Um I have a lot of things laid out in a spreadsheet and I have a whole tab just for questions so that when I get on a call I have my thoughts organized but I'm not constantly every single time a thought pops in my head messaging someone partly because if you've noticed a lot of times when someone messages you.

28:03.38
Angela
So right.

28:10.25
jessievalle
They figure out their answer on their own within 10 minutes and so by limiting your communication. You're also taking the initiative to try and figure it out on your own.

28:10.80
Angela
Right? yeah.

28:24.62
jessievalle
Or allowing others to try and figure it out on their own if you don't answer them right away.

28:27.66
Angela
Yeah, yeah, I've seen that a lot and there's a lot of ways to do that I you know I Love my alarms I set alarms all the time to help me remind some.

28:39.33
jessievalle
Ah.

28:40.19
Angela
Ah, my oldest has taken to during school if she remembers something that she needs to tell me or something she needs to do in the afternoon after school she will set an alarm and label it with the thing like just ah for a random time in the afternoon. Um.

28:50.68
jessievalle
Who.

28:57.49
Angela
And that way it'll go off and it'll remind her. Oh yeah I needed to ask Mom this or I needed to do this thing or I wanted to remember that which I think is really cool I Think that's a really cool way to help you remember stuff.

29:01.83
jessievalle
A.

29:09.94
jessievalle
Yeah, yeah, because inevitably I don't know about you but when I try to set reminders on my phone I Miss the notification. Ah yeah.

29:14.49
Angela
Yeah I miss the things. Yeah I do too all the time. That's why alarms because those are just gonna go off if I try and set a reminder inevitably I will miss it.

29:28.45
jessievalle
Yeah, so Alrighty. Ah, honestly like I said time is not replenishable. So It's really something that you should not feel weird or ashamed to protect.

29:50.47
Angela
Right? Yeah, absolutely um as someone whose kids are rapidly getting older I can say that you reach a point where you're like oh yeah, they're just gonna keep growing.

30:05.29
jessievalle
Um, yeah, yeah, my youngest is starting to look at words and sound them out and am like he's going to start reading? What is this? He's not my baby.

30:18.14
Angela
Right is not my baby anymore. Yeah, yeah, it's tough.

30:23.59
jessievalle
Ah, yeah, that is tough for sure I mean I'm proud of him but at the same time I'm like oh it feels like we're leaving another stage for good. Um, so.

30:27.28
Angela
Sure. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's hard.

30:39.81
jessievalle
